In Luke 22, before Jesus was arrested, it is written that he suffered greatly and sweated blood. Although rare, it is recognized as a hematidrosis, caused by too much stress.
At the time, crucifixion was considered the worst death for the worst criminal. But that was not all that Jesus had to face. He endured beatings so severe that they tore flesh from His body. He was beaten so brutally that his face and beard were torn. A ring of thorns 2-3 inches long goes deep into the scalp. The whip used to whip him had small iron balls and sharp bones. The bullets inflicted internal wounds while sharp bones tore through his flesh. His skeletal muscles, veins and intestines were exposed, causing severe blood loss. Most men do not survive this type of torture. After Jesus was severely beaten, he was forced to carry his cross while people laughed and spit at him.
Crucifixion was a process intended to inflict extreme pain, producing a slow and painful death. Eight-inch nails were driven into Jesus’ wrists and feet. The Roman soldiers knew that the tendons in the wrists would tear and break, forcing Jesus to use the muscles in his back for support and breathing. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the courage… Jesus endured this reality for 3 hours!
The Gospel of John says that after Jesus died, a Roman soldier pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out. The scientists explain that due to hypovolemic shock, the rapid heart rate causes fluid to accumulate in the sacs around the lungs and heart. The accumulation of fluid in the membrane around the heart is called pericardial and pulmonary effusion, a pleural effusion.
John 19:36-37 (KJV) For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Jesus went through all of this so that one day we might be in heaven with him. There is no greater love than the love Jesus has for you!
